Take a trip around the world of wines as you are introduced to wine regions and the classic wines that make them famous. Experience the ultimate introduction to the world’s wines. Enthusiasts will develop their understanding and knowledge of more than 100 wines through tastings and lectures from experts. This program is designed for enthusiasts and professionals who seek to develop their understanding and knowledge of wine. Our experts will guide and teach you how to identify and evaluate wines, pair wines with food, and how to buy, store, serve, and even sell wine. Since 1999, numerous enthusiasts and professionals have completed this course; so before you ponder over another wine list, join us and explore the world of wine.

Participants must purchase Windows on the World Complete Wine Course by Kevin Zraly (most recent version available).

Come get an overview of the wine business including: importers, whole-salers, growing grapes, making wine, retailing in supermarkets, restaurants, and liquor stores, analytical tastings, matching wine and food.

This course has been taught by industry-renowned experts Patrick “Chip” Cassidy, Bill Hebrank, and the fourth Master of Wine and Master Sommelier in the world, Eric Hemer. This spring, IHTER has invited guest instructor Emilio Guerra to teach in the School’s state-of-the-art wine lab.

  • Refine sensory evaluation and identify wine styles
  • Turn juice into wine and learn about test, filtration, PH malolactic fermentation, sulphur dioxide, and chaptialization

Participants must purchase Wine Myths and Reality by Benjamin Lewin (most recent version available).

Exams, Retakes, and Missed Classes

Participation and successful completion of the exam is required in order to receive a certificate for Wine Academy programs. Parking is not included.

The exam is scheduled for the last day of the 13-week course and requires a combination of a written and tasting passing score of the following (all information provided is subject to change without notices):

  • Written – 60% or more
  • Tasting – 4 out of 6
If a student is unsuccessful in passing the exam, a retake option is available upon request, for a reduced fee. However, the exam retake will be based on a minimum of five (5) or more. Note that if you should fail either part of the exam, you will only need to retake the portion you did not pass, not the entire exam.

All students requesting to retake an exam for any reason may send their request directly to Eric Hemer via e-mail at erichemer@southernwine.com. Upon approval from Mr. Hemer, please complete the Credit Card Authorization form and fax (do not e-mail) to (305) 919-4423 (ATTN: Wine Academy). Below you will find the fees and minimum requirements needed to schedule an exam retake.

Fees

  • Student requirement 5 – 6: $45
  • Student requirement 7 – 10: $35
  • Student requirement 11 or more: $25
If you are unable to attend a class for any reason, make ups are not available during the course or after your program has ended. No penalty will be assessed. Please discuss with the instructor what options are available to you.
